Designed by Brick & Batten, Built by Us: A Boulder Exterior Transformation

This Boulder home got a complete exterior overhaul. The home was already beautiful, but was looking a bit dated. So the homeowner worked with Brick & Batten, a virtual design service, to come up with a brand new look for the exterior.

Brick & Batten provided full renderings, a materials list, and color selections ready to go. The homeowner just needed a contractor to bring the vision to life, and that's where we came in.

So here is how the process went:

The House

The existing exterior was heavy brick, muted colors, and architectural elements that were starting to look dated. Brick & Batten's design called for replacing all of it with a layered material palette.

The final material list:

  • Structure: New gable over the main entrance
  • Roofing: Standing seam metal roof and F-Wave composite shingles
  • Siding: James Hardie fiber cement
  • Soffits & Fascia: Vesta Plank aluminum tongue and groove soffits
  • Stone & Columns: El Dorado stone veneer and AlumLA columns
  • Doors: New front door, new Pella bi-fold patio door, and Pella sliding patio doors
  • Garage Door: New full window garage door
  • Gutters: New gutter system to finish the project

The Build

There were two months of pre-planning before any construction started. We checked local building codes, fire code restrictions, and material availability in Colorado during planning. Some of the original specified materials couldn't be sourced here, so we found substitutions that held the design intent. A few of them ended up being better than the originals would have been.

The structural gable required reframing. We coordinated siding installation, stonework, soffit and column wraps, garage doors, and lighting upgrades. Nine separate crews. Twenty to thirty people on site during peak weeks. Three months from start to finish.

The Result

At the end of the project, the homeowners loved the new look of their home! The neighbors agreed. Several came by during the build to ask about doing something similar to their own homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire Brick & Batten for the design and use a separate contractor to build?

Yes, that's exactly how this project worked. Brick & Batten handles the design remotely. You bring the package to a contractor for bidding and execution. A complete design package means a more accurate bid and a cleaner build.

What siding was used on this project?

James Hardie fiber cement lap siding. We install Hardie throughout Colorado's Front Range. It holds paint well, handles freeze-thaw cycles, and requires less upkeep than wood.

How long did this project take?

About three months on site, plus two months of pre-planning. The scope included siding, natural stone, soffit and column wraps, a new garage door, window trim, and structural gable work. That kind of complexity takes real sequencing across trades.

Where do you work?

Throughout Colorado's Front Range, including Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins, and surrounding communities. If you're in the area and have a project, get in touch.
