James Hardie Siding Replacement in Boulder: A Homeowner's Story
Bobby moved into this home in Boulder two years before this project started. He had noticed the siding on his home was showing clear signs of deterioration.
He had three options: repaint, repair only the sections that were visibly rotting, or tear it all off and reside the entire home. Bobby decided to do the whole home replacement. He started calling contractors.
In Bobby's Words
Bobby sat down with us to talk about his experience. Here's how he described it:
We moved here two years ago. There was some obvious rotting, deterioration on some of the siding that we had. We had a few options — we could repaint, we could repair just where we noticed the rotting, or we could reside the entire home.
The main difference between them and the competitors was the personalization and the customer service that they provided — that we did not sense with the other two companies.
The reason I didn't go with the other company is mainly because of that last phone call I had with the owner of The Roofing & Siding Company. He spent an hour on the phone with me again, going through every one of my questions, every point in the quote that they had provided. And I got off the phone and I went to my wife and I said, this is the company I want to use. No doubt about it. And that's the honest truth, by the way. That's the honest truth.
What We Installed
This was a complete siding replacement on a single-family home in Boulder. The full scope:
- Siding: James Hardie Statement Collection in board and batten and lap profiles — Arctic White
- Trim: James Hardie Statement Collection trim — Iron Gray
- Soffits: James Hardie Statement Collection soffit — Iron Gray
- Fascia: James Hardie Statement Collection fascia — Iron Gray
- Gutters: New gutter system
The James Hardie Statement Collection is a step up from primed Hardie lap - you get more durable color because the finish is applied at the factory. Mixing board and batten with traditional lap is a classic pairing: the vertical batten profile looks great on gable ends and transitions naturally into horizontal lap across the main body of the house.
Arctic White siding with Iron Gray trim, soffits, and fascia is a classic combination — the contrast is clean and sharp without being harsh, and both colors hold up well under Colorado's high-altitude UV exposure.
The Build
The crew started by removing the old rotting siding and sheathing and installed new sheathing. Then they installed Hardie Weather Barrier housewrap. Getting the substrate and moisture protection right is what makes the rest of the installation perform the way it's supposed to.

Throughout the build, Bobby stayed closely involved. He walked the job regularly with the project manager, asked questions, got answers. We worked with Bobby frequently on design decisions like batten spacing to make sure the finished product looked just the way he wanted it.

Why the Phone Call Mattered
Bobby called three companies. All three showed up. All three sent quotes. The difference came down to how each company treated him through the process.
When homeowners are spending big money on their home's exterior, they want to feel heard — not pushed through a sales funnel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the James Hardie Statement Collection?
The James Hardie Statement Collection is James Hardie's factory-finished product line. Rather than installing primed siding that gets painted on-site, Statement Collection siding arrives with the color already baked on at the factory. The finish is more durable than field-applied paint because it's applied under controlled conditions and cured to the board. It's available in the full range of Hardie profiles — lap, board and batten, panel — in a curated palette of colors.
Why use both board and batten and lap siding on the same home?
Mixing profiles is a common way to add visual interest and break up large wall surfaces. Board and batten reads well vertically on gable ends and upper sections; lap is a natural fit for horizontal runs across the main body of the home. Together they give the exterior a layered look without requiring a dramatic architectural change.
Why replace all the siding instead of just repairing the damaged sections?
When siding is visibly deteriorating in spots, there's usually more happening beneath the surface. Patching only the rotted sections often results in a color and texture mismatch, and the underlying issues — moisture infiltration, compromised substrate — frequently extend beyond what's visible. A full replacement gives you a clean, warrantied installation and eliminates the hidden problem areas in one pass.
What is Iron Gray from James Hardie?
Iron Gray is a deep charcoal color from the James Hardie ColorPlus Technology palette. Paired with Arctic White siding, as on this project, it creates a high-contrast exterior that looks clean and intentional. It's a popular choice for trim, soffits, and fascia because it anchors the exterior without going full black, and it holds up well against Colorado's UV exposure.
