What Is the GAF Silver Pledge Warranty? A Homeowner's Guide

When you invest in a new roof, understanding what your warranty actually covers is just as important as choosing the right shingles. The GAF Silver Pledge Limited Warranty is one of the stronger coverage options available for residential roofing, and it's only available when you work with a GAF Certified Plus contractor. Here's what it covers, how long it lasts, and what you need to do to keep it valid.

What the Silver Pledge Warranty Covers

The Silver Pledge warranty covers GAF roofing products installed on your roof, including asphalt shingles, ridge cap shingles, starter strip shingles, leak barrier products, roof deck protection, attic ventilation products, pipe boot flashing, and seam tape for roof decks.

There are four main types of protection built into this warranty:

  • Manufacturing defects. If a GAF product fails because of how it was made
  • Wind damage. If shingles fail to seal, blow off, or sustain wind damage up to the covered wind speed
  • Algae discoloration. If blue-green algae causes pronounced staining on qualifying shingles
  • Misapplication. If installation errors on GAF products or certain flashings (at valleys, dormers, chimneys, and plumbing vents) cause performance problems

That last point is significant. Most manufacturer warranties don't cover installation errors at all. The Silver Pledge does, specifically because it's tied to GAF Certified Plus contractors who are held to a higher installation standard.

How Long Does Coverage Last?

Coverage length depends on which shingles are installed. For GAF's Lifetime shingles, including LayerLock-labeled Timberline shingles, the manufacturing defect warranty is Lifetime, meaning it lasts as long as you own the home. The non-prorated Smart Choice Protection Period for those shingles is 50 years, which is the window during which GAF covers the full reasonable cost of labor and materials without reducing the payout for prior use.

A few key figures to keep in mind:

  • Lifetime shingles: Lifetime warranty, 50-year non-prorated period, 15-year wind coverage by default (up to 110 mph without special installation, 130 mph with special installation)
  • LayerLock shingles with WindProven installation: No maximum wind speed restriction
  • Algae protection: 25 to 30 years depending on the shingle, with a 10 to 15-year non-prorated period

For shorter-term shingle lines, such as the Marquis WeatherMax (30 years) or Royal Sovereign (25 years), coverage terms are shorter across all categories.

The Non-Prorated Period Matters More Than You Might Think

The Smart Choice Protection Period is one of the most important parts of this warranty to understand. During this window, GAF covers the full reasonable cost to repair or replace defective products, including labor and tear-off costs where necessary. After the non-prorated period ends, the remedy is reduced based on how long the products have been in use.

The calculation is straightforward: GAF divides the number of months elapsed since installation by the total months in the warranty term. The longer the shingles have been on your roof, the smaller GAF's contribution will be. For Lifetime warranties, GAF's contribution drops to 20% in years 51 and beyond.

This is why the 50-year non-prorated period on Lifetime shingles is meaningful. For most homeowners, that window covers the entire time they'll own the property.

What the Warranty Does Not Cover

The Silver Pledge warranty does not cover:

  • Hail damage, fire, or winds above the covered speed (except where WindProven applies)
  • Ice damming (except leaks in areas covered by a GAF Leak Barrier that are caused by a manufacturing defect in that product)
  • Damage from structural or foundation issues
  • Inadequate attic ventilation
  • Mold growth inside or outside the building
  • Damage to or from rooftop equipment like satellite dishes, AC units, or skylights
  • Color variations, fading, or discoloration from anything other than blue-green algae on qualifying shingles

If you're concerned about hail or storm damage specifically, that's a separate conversation involving your homeowner's insurance rather than your product warranty.

Transferability and Registration: What You Need to Do

The warranty is transferable once. If you sell your home within the first 20 years after installation, the new owner receives the same coverage you had. After 20 years, coverage for the new owner is reduced to a two-year period following the sale.

To transfer the warranty, the new owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of the property transfer.

There are a few requirements for the warranty to take effect at all:

  1. The warranty must be registered to you
  2. Your contractor must register it within 45 days of installation
  3. Your contractor must be paid in full

If you haven't received your warranty from GAF within 60 days of installation, call GAF at 1-888-532-5767 (option 5).

To file a claim at any point, notify GAF within 30 days of noticing a problem. You can do that online at gaf.com/contact, by phone at 1-800-458-1860, or by email at warrantyclaims@gaf.com. Do not repair or replace products before notifying GAF, or your claim may be denied.

Why Contractor Certification Makes This Warranty Available

The Silver Pledge is only available through GAF Certified Plus contractors. That tier of certification requires contractors to meet specific installation and training standards. The misapplication coverage in particular is tied to this. If an installation error is discovered within the first two years, the Certified Plus contractor is responsible for making repairs. GAF steps in only if the contractor is unable or unwilling to do so.

If you're evaluating asphalt shingle roofing options and warranty coverage is a factor in your decision, asking whether a contractor can offer the Silver Pledge is a reasonable way to assess their certification level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Silver Pledge warranty cover labor costs?

During the Smart Choice Protection Period, yes. GAF will pay the full reasonable cost of labor to repair or re-cover defective products, including tear-off and disposal if necessary. After the non-prorated period, the remedy is reduced to reflect the use already received from the products.

What wind speeds does the Silver Pledge warranty cover?

It depends on the shingle and how it was installed. For most GAF Lifetime shingles, coverage goes up to 110 mph with standard installation and up to 130 mph with special installation (which requires 6 nails per shingle and GAF Starter Strip Products at eaves and rakes). LayerLock-labeled shingles installed to WindProven requirements have no maximum wind speed restriction.

Can I transfer my Silver Pledge warranty if I sell my home?

Yes, once. The new owner needs to notify GAF in writing within one year of the property transfer. If the transfer happens within the first 20 years, the second owner gets the same coverage as the original owner. After 20 years, coverage for the second owner is limited to two years from the date of transfer.

What should I do if I think I have a warranty claim?

Notify GAF within 30 days of noticing the problem. You can report online at gaf.com/contact, by phone at 1-800-458-1860, or by email at warrantyclaims@gaf.com. Do not repair or replace anything before GAF has evaluated the claim, or it may be denied. If urgent repairs are necessary, provide GAF with reasonable notice before proceeding.

Does the Silver Pledge warranty cover algae staining?

Only if your shingles are labeled with StainGuard Plus PRO, StainGuard Plus, or StainGuard logos. Coverage specifically applies to blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) causing pronounced discoloration. Other types of discoloration, including mold, fungus, or lichen, are not covered. The algae warranty term ranges from 10 to 30 years depending on the shingle, with a non-prorated period of 1 to 15 years.
