How The Hail History Lookup Works

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center keeps a database of every severe hail report in the country. Each one has a date, a location, and a measured or estimated hail size. We searched it for every report in and around Colorado since 2000, then for your address we:

  1. Measure the straight-line distance and direction from your home to each report
  2. Count the reports and separate storm days within 1, 3, 5, and 10 miles
  3. Pull out the largest hail and the most recent storms for each distance

What the data can and can't tell you. These are reports from trained spotters, National Weather Service staff, emergency managers, and the public. Someone had to see the hail and report it, so storms at night or away from people are often missed, sizes are estimates, and one report can stand in for a swath of hail several miles long. The weather service only treats hail of 1 inch or larger as severe, so smaller hail is often left out, and radar-estimated hail isn't included at all. Treat a report nearby as a reason to look, not proof of damage, and no report as no proof your roof is fine.

Reports through December 31, 2025 are NOAA's finalized data. Reports from 2026 come from SPC's preliminary daily storm reports, currently through October 17, 2026, and can still change.

What Hail Size Damages A Roof?

Hail is measured by its diameter and described by everyday objects. There is no single cutoff, but roofers see a clear pattern on asphalt shingle roofs:

  • Under 1 inch (pea to nickel): rarely breaks a sound shingle, but can knock granules loose on an older roof and dent gutters, downspouts, window screens, and vent caps.
  • 1 to 1.5 inches (quarter to ping pong ball): where shingle bruising commonly starts, especially on roofs more than 10 years old or when wind drives the hail sideways.
  • 1.75 inches and up (golf ball and bigger): often cracks or punctures shingles, dents metal roofing, and breaks skylights.

Age, material, wind, and how long the hail fell all matter as much as size. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles pass the toughest level of the UL 2218 impact test, which uses a 2 inch steel ball, and hold up far better. Learn what to look for in what hail damage on a roof looks like.

Denver And Front Range Hail History

Denver and the Front Range sit at the edge of what forecasters call Hail Alley, and most of our hail falls between May and August, with June the busiest month. Here is how often NOAA has logged hail within 5 miles of the center of each city since 2000:
